Do you follow people or choose God’s way?

While reviewing a daily devotional I received by email recently, the verse really stood out.

It was Galatians 1:10 – “Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.”

I’ve spent a significant part my life trying to please people by doing what THEY thought I should be doing. The problem in trying to please people, is that they are never satisfied with our effort and often work to keep us from engaging in the purpose God created us specifically to carry out.

We’ve all been given at least one tremendous gift to use in building his kingdom. He also places in our hearts a specific assignment to carry out that is ideally suited to our skills, talent and ability.

When we find that purpose and walk close to God to carry it out – regardless of what others may say – we truly will find the fullness of live Jesus promised in John 10:10.

The same holds true for businesses.

When business owners find that sweet spot in serving in the capacity God created them alone to fill, amazing things happen.

But, when they opt to please people instead of God, all success can quickly evaporate.

That’s why I was concerned with Chick-fil-A’s announcement that they were going to end donations to Christian organizations which believed in the sanctity of marriage between one man and one woman.

For years, the restaurant chain has been vilified by the alphabet soup of organizations promoting all types of sexual confusion simply for suggesting marriage is between one man and one woman.

Yet, by promoting God’s view of marriage, how did God reward the chain?

It made more money per restaurant than McDonald’s, Starbucks and Subway combined, even while closing on Sundays.

Granted, Chick-fil-A makes the money, and the chain can opt to spend its profits any way it wishes.

But, the message being sent is that the restaurant wants to go along to get along. The problem is that never works.

Within days of capitulating and ending donations to groups like the Salvation Army and Fellowship of Christian athletes, the alphabet soup gang has already announced it’s not enough.

Even if the company stopped making donations to faith-based groups, if the senior executives continued to do so with money they earned, the backlash would continue. Will those executives seek to please people instead of pleasing God, too?

Whenever we try to follow Christ and live out Biblical principles in our lives or in the way we do business, we will never, ever appease worldly people, cultures or organizations.

So, don’t even try.

When we seek to please God, then he opens doors that nobody can shut.
