“This might not be politically correct, but this is my truth,” Nashville Police Officer James Wells began. “I literally heard God tell me to turn around and go check on Topping (his partner), who was by herself down on Broadway.”

That’s the best quote out of the story about how a police officer gives glory to God for saving his life, as reported by Yahoo News.

Topping and Wells described the incident as strange from the beginning, a moment that felt more like a scene you would see in a movie than in real life.

I have had that same type of experience — an audible voice directly me to take immediate action.

I was sitting at a stoplight on my way to pick up a babysitter many years ago. I looked up and saw a very young boy half in a wagon quickly moving downhill toward a busy intersection.

“Go,” was the voice I heard, prompting me to pull into the intersection and bring all four lanes of traffic to a halt seconds before the wagon rolled through and bounced off my front tire.

Wells, who described himself as a “spiritual” person, credited God with helping him survive.

“I’m not going to shy away from that, because that’s what saved my life,” Wells said. “That’s what got me to see my kids and my wife on Christmas. And ‘good to see you’ has a completely different meaning for me now.”

I love reading stories like this that not only remind us that God is with us always, just as Jesus promised in Matthew 28:20, but that we can do incredible things if we just follow the promptings of the Holy Spirit.

Lives can be saved or changed — and God gets the glory!
